Getting a photo ready for restoration
We deliver the strongest results only if we are provided with a high-quality photo scan. To make it easy for you, we have prepared a short guide on how to make a high-quality scan and thereby use our services online.
To get started, check the surface of the scanner for dust and tiny particles. It is best to clean the surface with a lint-free cloth before you start scanning. Place the photo on the scanner glass with the image facing down until it is flattened out.
Old photos are often deformed over time and may not be placed flat enough on the glass. In such cases, you may want to use a heavy object to hold the scanner lid over the photo. The scanners differ in functionality, but they share a similar set of basic settings that you should use.
Select RGB (or 24-bit color) in the Scan Type option. You should do this even if your photo is black and white. You can get more fine details than you would with grayscale scanning. Next, you need to set the resolution. It should be at least 600 dpi. If the original photo is too small or you want a larger and more detailed image, it is better to adjust the resolution to 1200 dpi.
You’d better turn off all automatic settings because you don’t want the scanner to edit the photo in any way. You can preview the result and see how it will look. It is vital that the photo is flat and no part of it is cropped. When saving the file, choose the JPG format with maximum quality and minimum compression. The TIF format can also be selected, but the file size will be larger.
If you intend to email a scanned image, make sure that the attachment will not be compressed. If it does, or if the file is too large for your email client, use one of the file exchangers.
